Tempesteria ignisii (Eastern fire storm beetle) is a relatively small embroidered beetle, native to hot arid regions. The beetles are nocturnal, and are attracted to campfires and bonfires at night. They are mostly orange, red and yellow, with dark orange antenna, yellow legs and orange mouthparts. This species is 7.5cm long (3") x 5cm wide (2") x 5cm tall (2"). In late winter or early spring, they wait in burrows for the crackling of a roaring fire, and approach in hopes of finding scraps of marshmallow, or hot cups of tea. Easter camping trips can trigger the emergence of a large numbers of beetles in a short time

This beetle is completely stitched by hand. Its body is hand dyed woollen felt, stuffed with pure wool. Its wing covers (elytra!) are stitched with cotton and silk threads and sequins over hand dyed cotton fabric. Under the elytra are delicate dark orange wings in handmade lace. The antenna and legs are wire, hand wound with cotton threads. It is embellished over its thorax with cotton and silk threads. Many careful hours of stitching went into creating this beetle.

The beetles are designed as delightful shelf ornaments. They contain wires and delicate fabrics that make them completely unsuitable as toys.
