Humusomus horizontalii (Secret earth beetle) is a small burrowing beetle with patterned elytra and copper-black wings. Adults spend their lives building copper-lined maze-like dens deep in the earth, polishing the walls to a deep shine with their smooth antennae. They are mainly brown, with pale wing cases, dark brown legs and antennae and black wings veined with copper. This species is 7.5cm long (3") x 5cm wide (2") x 5cm tall (2"). They enjoy listening to deep trance and industrial house music and collecting soft toys.
This beetle is completely stitched by hand. Its body is woollen felt, stuffed with pure wool. Its wing covers (elytra!) are stitched with cotton and silk threads and tiny beads over silk. Under the elytra are delicate black silk wings embroidered with metallic copper thread. The antenna and legs are wire, hand wound with cotton threads. It is embellished over its thorax with beads and cotton. Many careful hours of stitching went into creating this beetle.
The beetles are designed as delightful shelf ornaments. They contain wires and delicate fabrics that make them completely unsuitable as toys.
